Beneficiary

Since 2000, the SSRun has raised money for a variety of local children’s charities. In 2012, the SSRUN became aligned with a single cause - The Play Ball! Foundation.

About Play Ball!
Getting more feet on the field - that’s our practical goal. But, helping kids play sports goes much further than that. We do it with a passion for helping them win both on the field and in the classroom. We do it to share the joy of sports. And putting smiles on all those young faces. Who can resist? Remember how sports made a difference in your life? Participate in the SSRun and give a kid the same opportunity.

Why Play Ball!
Most people may not realize that where suburban school systems offer many sports leagues at different levels, Boston Public Schools only have two to offer (basketball and track) to its 11,300 students. On top of that, for many Boston Public School students pay-to-play fees are out of reach.

What we do
We seek to create and expand sports opportunities for urban middle schoolers because we strongly believe that athletic competition introduced at an impressionable age can greatly improve school performance, community involvement, and life skills of youth. It’s healthy physically—and mentally.

How we do it
Through partnerships with Boston Public Schools and privately raised funds, we secure fields and gyms, hire and train teacher coaches and supply transportation, officials, uniforms, and equipment. We provide a variety of competitive sports to more than 2,300 Boston and Lawrence Public Middle School athletes with 75 teams (and counting!) offering boys’ football and baseball, girls’ volleyball and Double Dutch, ice hockey, and boys and girls soccer.

Where we’re headed
Despite our growing success, Play Ball! serves 11% of the 11,300 Boston Middle School students, and there is a long waiting list for team funding. We continue to strive to get more of Boston’s kids’ feet on the field, in the gym and on the path to success. Help us get there!
